We are looking forward to Constance Holden heading up one of our breakout sessions this year, focusing on the importance of end-of-life conversations and her non-profit organization, The Conversation Project.
Constance Holden is the Co-Founder of The Conversation Project in Boulder County, and Chair of the Ethics Consultation Team at Boulder Community Health, where she recently retired as the Director of Oncology Services and the Chair of the Palliative Care Program. She has worked for 6 hospitals and 4 hospice programs in staff and leadership positions.
In 2013, She and Jean Abbott developed The Conversation Project in Boulder County, modeled after the national project started by Boston Globe columnist, Ellen Goodman. Her experience in those settings highlighted the critical importance of pro-active family conversations about end-of-life values and wishes…before it is too late.
"While 82% of Americans say that it is important to put end-of-life wishes in writing, only 23% actually have done it. An even smaller percent have actually spoken with their family about their wishes. Unless your family knows what you want, they are left with the distress of guessing how to best care for you. Starting the conversation is never easy – no one wants to sound gloomy or to upset ourselves or others, but families and health care professionals report that it is a relief when the subject of how we want the end of our life to look is brought into the open and our choices can be honored because of careful forethought and conversation." - www.theconversationprojectinboulder.org
